Winnenden, December 2005 – An emergency case was simulated, the chosen scenario was the explosion of a “dirty bomb” during the Football World Championship 2006 in Munich. During the “Dekon V-Platz 25 – Modell Bayern” test run at Fire Station 2 (in Munich), the Bavarian Red Cross and the Munich Fire Brigades was challenged with the simulated disaster situation in which the decontamination of injured people contaminated with dangerous substances was the focus of attention. In accordance with the criteria of the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, a decontamination line was set up which determines exactly the process of the decontamination of the injured people. After first aid in the form of life-saving emergency measures, the clothes of an injured patient on a stretcher were cut open and removed, and then decontamination using the mediclean 2000 se was started.

The mediclean 2000 se was especially designed for the decontamination of injured persons and is used for patients who have come into contact with chemical, biological or radioactive materials. In this exercise of precautionary measures, the appliance was used for the spot decontamination of wounds and for whole-body decontamination of individual patients. After the decontamination process which took about 5 to 7 minutes using a ready-made decontamination or disinfection solution, the patients were put on a stretcher and transported to the hospital for further treatment. In both test runs with a total of 20 subjects, the mediclean 2000 se could be used successfully. After decontamination, no residual contaminants or test chemicals could be detected on any of the treated persons. According to Kärcher Futuretech Sales Manager Wolfgang Marx, “the use of mediclean 2000 se was very successful". He added that "the task forces of the Bavarian Red Cross and Municipal Fire Brigades in Munich did an excellent job”. Kärcher Futuretech Product Manager Rainer Mühleisen emphasises the international distribution of the mediclean 2000 se: "In addition to the French Ministry of Interior, the appliances are in use in European countries such as Belgium, England, Norway and Russia, but also in Saudi Arabia, Japan and Jordan”.

Details:
The appliance works on the principle of DAE (direct application and extraction method), it enables safe decontamination directly on site and at the same time reduces the amount of decontamination solution needed. The decontamination solution is sucked off immediately and collected in a separate tank. This minimises the risk of contaminants being spread. The body nozzle is adapted to the DAE method and prevents the solution from dripping off – everything is extracted, nothing drops onto the ground.
The brush ring can be easily replaced. A new sterile brush ring is inserted for every patient.
The appliance is equipped with an integrated tank for the disinfection or decontamination solution, and a tank for collecting the used solution. This tank can be removed to enable easy disposal of the waste liquid. The spray pressure and water quantity are adapted for the medical requirements. A heater integrated in the mediclean 2000 se makes it possible to heat the disinfection or decontamination solution to the required temperature.
In a previous test at the department of nuclear medicine at the Bundeswehr Central Hospital in Coblence, the mediclean 2000 se showed a much better decontamination capability than conventional cleaning with water and brush. The risk of damage to the skin is also lower because the cleaning process is more gentle. The reduced time needed for the decontamination of persons is another advantage of the mediclean 2000 se.
